Inigo Jones Slateworks
Established in 1861 to prefabricate school writing slates, the company has a long history of crafting items from Welsh Slate. Today, you can view the work being created in the fully operational factory, when visiting the ‘Great Slate Tour’. You will have an opportunity to try your hand at calligraphy, and engraving on a piece of slate that you get to keep as a souvenir. The company also has a showroom where its slate products are available for purchase as are other Welsh and Celtic gifts.
The tour of the works was introduced in the early 1980’s by popular demand, and has recently been updated with new exhibitions audio equipment. It is a self- guided tour and is both educational and fun. There is an introductory video presentation, after which you can wander through the workshops at your own pace and view the machines, accompanied by your own audio guide that is available in several languages.
There are geological, historical, calligraphy and letter cutting exhibitions, along with a family quiz, that offers the opportunity for children to win a slate prize. The last entry into the self-guided tour is at 4pm.
In the showroom Welsh Slate nameplates, number-plates and plaques can be engraved to order along with bespoke printed coasters and plaques.
The Slate Workshops and Showroom are open every day of the year, including weekends, (except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day) from 9am to 5pm.
Relax with a drink and a bite to eat, after what we are sure will be an enjoyable and fulfilling visit at the onsite Café and farm shop; Gerlan Café. The cafe is also open every day as above but from 10am to 4pm (Winter opening), 10am to 5pm (Summer opening).
The whole site is fully Dog Friendly.
